A hidden “switch-off” signal could predict solar storms seven years early
sciencedaily.com · 6h ago

A newly discovered turning point in the Sun’s 11-year cycle could allow scientists to predict future solar activity years earlier than before. At this “switch-off” point, the most violent space weather abruptly ends, and the remaining number of sunspots offers clues about the next cycle’s strength. Early projections suggest Solar Cycle 26 may be moderate, but a clearer forecast is expected in about two years.

Umtanum Creek Footbridge in Ellensburg, Washington
atlasobscura.com · 16h ago

Yakima (pronounced "YAK-uh-maw") Canyon, where the Yakima River traverses a water gap through Manastash Ridge, is an obvious thoroughfare and was used by Native Americans for thousands of years, and then by Euro-American trappers and settlers into the 19th century. It was also an obvious route for a railroad, and the Northern Pacific Railway was built through it in the early 1880s, along the west bank of the river. (The railroad is still in active use and is now part of the BNSF system.) Railroading was an extremely labor-intensive business well into the 20th century, and camps were built along the right-of-way to house the trackwalkers, signal men, section gangs, and other workers. In 1885 one such camp was built here at Umtanum Creek, where the eponymous creek joins the Yakima. The…

theguardian.com · 2h ago

Tebas spoke out as the dust settled on the 2026 World Cup with suggestions that the 2030 tournament could be increased from 48 to 64 teams . “Increasing the number of national teams makes no sense,” Tebas said in an interview with the Italian newspaper La Gazzetta dello Sport. “The football industry is not just the World Cup, which is the most important event. Not everything can revolve around the World Cup. It is national competitions that support this sport. Continue reading...

Nico Williams, Ferran Torres and Spain’s adaptable World Cup excellence | Jeff Rueter
theguardian.com · 6h ago

The two substitutes combined on the World Cup winning goal not by changing the game, but by offering it what it needed, when it was needed As Spain built into the second half of extra-time of Sunday’s World Cup final, it was already clear that Argentina hoped to make them suffer. Every challenge left no stud unshown. Their defenders labored to block striker Mikel Oyarzabal from his typical lanes of service, with Spain taking 11 of their 20 attempts from beyond the box. Lionel Scaloni’s side may have been aggressive, but they were also just structured enough to withstand the endless monsoon of Spanish pressure. After the 62nd minute, when Luis de la Fuente brought his first two charges off the bench, Spain adapted to find new avenues to attack, adjusting with Enzo Fernández’s sending-off…
